Sonic's speed and quick wits usually gets the better of Eggman, and he is often joined by friends such as Miles "Tails" Prower, Amy Rose and Knuckles the Echidna, among others. The world of Sonic typically sees the titular blue hedgehog attempting to thwart the villainous Doctor Eggman and his evil schemes, typically ranging from converting the local populace into robots, or to conquer the world through some diabolical means. In a way, this was done to compete aganst Nintendo's Super Mario series As usual, the games start easy and get harder as the player goes along the way. Games in the Sonic series were made to be cool, and be played and enjoyed by video game players of all ages, though in some games there are darker and more mature tones. The series began with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, whose success led to over fifty further video games featuring Sonic and his friends in the decades which followed. The Sonic the Hedgehog series primarily consists of video games owned and published by Sega, starring its corporate mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. Not quite in the same spirit as when Sega gave away some sweet retro-style games for their 60th birthday in 2020. It wouldn’t be a birthday without an over-priced gift after all. Or Sonic’s 31st 15th birthday, as RPS commenter KingFunk astutely pointed out at the time of the announcement. Sega announced Sonic Origins will launch on June 23rd, which just so happens to be Sonic’s 31st birthday. They’re not leaving us the option to buy the classic versions as an alternative either. While Sonic Mania devs Headcannon have no doubt done a charming job jazzing up all the games included in Sonic Origins, you can’t help but feel Sega are gouging a bit here. I’m not the best mathematician but that seems to be a hefty bump up for what are essentially the same games. Each of Sonic Origins’ component games costs £4/$5/€4.50 on Steam, so that’s £16/$20/€18 in total.
